The three questions everyone asks first.
What it costs, whether the council has to approve it, and whether to build in concrete or drop in a fibreglass shell. These are the long answers, written for Cape Town ground and Cape Town access rather than for pools in general, and with no numbers in them we cannot stand behind.
What a swimming pool costs in Cape Town
In Cape Town in 2026, a standard fibreglass installation typically starts around R180 000 fully commissioned, and a custom concrete pool usually runs from R280 000 upward. The gap between those two numbers is not really about the pool — it is about how much of the work happens in a factory versus in your garden. What moves either figure on a specific property is ground, access and level: what is under the grass, how close a machine can get to it, and how far the garden falls away.
Do you need council approval for a pool in Cape Town?
Yes. In the City of Cape Town a swimming pool needs approved building plans before it is built, and the barrier around it must meet SANS 10134, the national standard for safety barriers to private swimming pools. Both are legal requirements rather than recommendations. The drawings are prepared and submitted on your behalf as part of our build, and the approval runs in parallel with the early site work so it is not sitting in the way at the end.
Concrete or fibreglass: which pool suits your Cape Town garden?
Fibreglass is faster and cheaper — usually swimming inside two weeks, typically from around R180 000 — but you are choosing from moulded shells that come in fixed shapes and sizes. Concrete takes six to ten weeks and starts from around R280 000, and it will fit any shape, any depth and any awkward site. On a flat garden with clear access where one of the standard shells suits you, fibreglass is normally the better value. On a steep, narrow or landlocked Cape Town plot, concrete is often not the better option so much as the only one.
